the Crack In Space in Living Glass mode

Well what would you expect form a company made up of a family of artists coming from different directions where one is from art and the other from design but to come up with a new category of home furnishing, the sculpted portal, which debuted in the 2010 RI Fine Home Furnishings Show. We needed a language element (what we call our building blocks) that blended the worlds of art and design by changing states. In our first limited edition series the Crack In Space these sculpted portals live in two states, ambient living glass or walk up to it and it turns into a Cup and String window to its mate.

For over 30 years we have been exploring blending art and design from a variety of perspectives, creating interactive furniture in our college years, our functional art Tabula Rasa series. The problem at hand was solving the Auntie factor. This all started with Doris and her sister talking on the phone regularly and that we have all this technology so they can see each other while talking. Then why couldn't the two see each other without having to go to a computer or TV type device? Well if the device was just like an odd shaped piece of living glass on a stand and using it would be as simple as using a chair. And hence the new category of home furnishing wa born. The Crack In Space sculpted portal allows us to explore this new and exciting world.

Doris Weiner has been evolving her art language, the building blocks for her works, from paper to multi media where scale and technologies are not limited. Sandy Knoll Works is a unique family story where Doris Weiner and her son, Alan, create art using this evolving language to produce WOW with engagement and anticipation. Doris works out of her New England studio at Sandy Knoll Works where she also runs regular open studio sessions and workshops throughout the year.

Currently Doris is Inquiring about her ambient surface as it evolved into the living glass. The puzzle is how to create dynamic surfaces that are always vibrant and engaging without forcing the observer to have to watch for extended times. It turns out that this is the same puzzle that the ambient video world has been chasing for some time. Our living Wall series in the 2004 Gallery Gora show and then the 2005 Art Expo NY show used the original artworks as seeds for video facets that we then broadcast back onto the artwork. Doris is now inquiring about applying this to the living glass surface, a shaped piece of glass floating in space with the ambient content that gives the art viewer the engaging experience where the viewer can look into the ever present artwork but does not watch the artwork.

Doris Weiner's work is suitable for corporate and home placements and commissions. Doris Weiner uses a large variety of materials such as metal, wood, Neon, robotics, computer projectors etcetera. The sculptural wall and floor art is on a larger scale.
